Nantou City Mayor Chang Chia-Che announced on the 17th that starting from March 1, roadside parking spaces and off-street parking lots in Nantou City will begin charging fees. Initially, there will be a total of 711 paid parking spaces, with a planned hourly rate of NT$20. Payments can be made via convenience stores, mobile payments, or payment booths, providing a variety of options.

Chang Chia-Che stated yesterday that the original plan was to implement the roadside parking fee plan by the end of 2023 at the earliest. However, due to delays in hardware installation, the first phase of the roadside parking and off-street parking lot fee system will complete equipment installation by January 31. There will be a one-month trial operation in February, and full charges will begin in March.

The Nantou City Office mentioned that currently, there are a total of 711 parking spaces planned for fees in the city center, including 500 roadside parking spaces and 211 off-street parking spaces.

As for the fees, the city office has temporarily set the rate at NT$20 per hour. There are various payment methods available, including basic payment machines, using apps linked to credit cards (LinePay, JKO Pay, etc.), payments at the four major convenience stores, eTag payment, and going to designated payment points or cooperating stores for payment.

Chang Chia-Che stated that there are mixed opinions about charging for roadside parking, but parking fees are an important first step in the development of a city. He urged everyone to cooperate and work together to maintain the traffic and living environment of Nantou City.

Nantou County does not charge for roadside parking, leading to long-term occupation of parking spaces and public complaints about the difficulty of finding parking. To address this issue, Jiji Township started implementing paid parking on holidays last September. Nantou City and Caotun Township also held public hearings and planned to follow suit, aiming to start charging for parking by the end of last year. However, due to delays in hardware installation, it is now confirmed that charges will officially begin in March.
